Majors Game 4 Recaps

What a great day for VLL baseball!  Not only did the weather hold off all day, but the Opening Day ceremony was absolutely spectacular and was only outdone by the incredible Majors games that followed.  We had 2 games go into extras a ton of tightly contested games throughout the day.  Below are the recaps for game 4 on Opening Day:


Cubs over Twins 4-2

The Cubs kept their perfect season intact, improving to 4-0, behind a dominant pitching performance from Pax L.  Pax fanned 14 over 5 full innings, allowing only two runs and scattering 4 hits.  Offense was at a premium in this matchup, but the Cubs strung together timely hits to edge the talented Twins.  Pax, Bryce B., Holden S., Jack L, Ashlon G. and Jae W. all collected knocks for the Cubs.  The Twins had a stellar pitching performance from Nate H., who went 3.2 innings, striking out 8 and scattering 4 hits while only allowing 1 earned run.  IJ M. led the offense for the Twins with 2 doubles.  Nate, Caleb G. and Charlie N. had hits for the Twins.

Pirates over Blue Jays 7-6

In a game where 6 innings wasn’t enough, the Pirates were able to edge out the Jays when Simon T. scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the top of the 7th.  Mitch W. was nails in the bottom half of the frame, retiring the Jays 1-2-3 to preserve the Pirates victory.  On offense the Pirates were led by Eli N. who narrowly missed his first home run of the season, settling for a 3-4 day with a double and 2 RBI.  Kyle H, Mitch W. and Simon T. all had multiple hits for the Pirates who also received hits from Ryan V. and Jonah M..  Bradley S. was a shining star on offense for the Jays, going 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Alman K, Adam R., Andrew R. and Caroline B. had hits for the Jays.

Yankees over Reds 5-4

In another tilt that couldn’t be decided in regulation, the Yankees had a walk of walk in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory Saturday.  The Yankees pitchers, Albert L., John K., Aaron K and Adam K, combined to only allow 5 hits and struck out 12 Reds on the day.  On offense the Yanks were led by Adam K. who went 3-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI.  Aaron, John, Trey H., Gavin S. and Albert had hits on the day for the Yankees.  Zach S. was nails on the mound in the losing effort for the Reds, going 3 complete while striking out 7 and only allowing 4 hits and no earned runs.  Zach, Connor E., August M., Austin B. and Sam S. had hits for the Reds.

Giants over Colts 3-1

In a low scoring affair, the Giants hung on for the 3-1 victory.  The bottom of the first was all the offense the Giants needed with the scoring capped by a line drive single to right  by Colson P. plating the third run of the inning.  Adam M. had a huge day, going 3-3 with a double and a triple, while Dominic L. hurled 4 full innings, striking out 0 and only allowing 1 hit.  Jack L. was dazzling for the Colts on the mound, going 4 innings, striking out 7 and not allowing a single run. 

Nationals over Braves 5-3

The top of the Nationals lineup had a day!  Ashton H., Chase H., Owen H. and Declan H (The 4 H’s) combined to go 10-13 with 3 extra base hits, 4 RBI and 5 runs scored!  Brayden B. was excellent on the mound for the Nats, going 3 full innings and allowing only 2 hits, no earned runs and striking out 7.  In the bottom of the 6th the Braves had the tying run at the plate with 1 out, but Chase was able to glove a sharply hit grounder up the middle to start a game ending double play!  Brady K. and Reece A. were awesome on the mound for the Braves, going a combined 4 innings and only allowing 3 hits and no runs.  Jack K. led the way on offense for the Bravos, going 2-3 with a double.  Brady K, Asher C. and Connor M. also had hits for the Braves. 

Cardinals over Dodgers 6-2

Two 3 runs innings was the secret for success or the Cardinals on Opening Day.  The first rally of the day was started by Kalil M, who laced a double to left field, followed by a single by Joseph P..  Eric C. got the scoring started for the Cards with a hard grounder to plate Kalil.  Sean Y. collected 3 RBI for the Cardinals.  Flynn S. and Nathan W. pitched well for the Dodgers only allowing 3 earned runs on the day.  At the plate, Sam H. and Liam S. had hits for the Dodgers.

White Sox over Orioles 10-4

The White Sox have started the season on a tear, and Opening Day was no different, improving their record to 4-0.  With their ace on the shelf, the Sox got plenty of quality pitching from Henry R. who went 5 innings and only allowed 8 hits and struck out 4.   The bats stayed hot for the Sox, who combined for 4 extra base hits and collected 12 hits on the night. Charlie J., Jonah K, Jacob S. and Thomas B. all had a multiple hit night, while Henry, Ryan A and William S. collected hits.  Max R. was a shining star for the Orioles Saturday, going 3-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. 

Phillies over Red Sox 10-8

In one of the more exciting games of the season, the Phillies outlasted the Red Sox in a back-and-forth affair by plating 5 in the top half of the 6th inning.  The big hit of the night came from Cole P. who laced a double to the outfield, driving in the game tying and go-ahead run for the Phillies.  Charlie C. added an insurance run with a triple to the fence and came in for the bottom of the 6th to preserve the victory.  Kyle O, Carter T. and Karim A. had multiple hits for the Phillies, while Jackson S. also had a double.  The Red Sox had a ton of offense on the night from up and down the lineup.  Vaughn W. and Luke L. had multiple hits for the Sox, while Adrian O., Brayden P., Cody H., Eli S., and Carter J. also had hits.  Brayden P. was lights out on the mound for the Sox, going 2.2 innings and not allowing a single hit, while striking out 6.
