Majors 3/30 & 3/31 Results and Recap
Majors 3/30 & 3/31 Results and Recap
After an unseasonably cold start to the week, March’s mercurial weather finally gave VLL a chance to get some games in over the past few days. The “warmer” weather led to our first home runs of the season with James B, Sam B and Josh E all depositing Wilson baseballs over the fence. While we are now facing downtime with FCPS spring break upon us, the action from the last couple of days has set the tone for the rest of the season.
Phillies over Pirates 7-5
The Phillies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind an opposite field home run from Sam Brewer, but the Pirates were not giving up that easy. Behind Kyle H 2 line drive singles, the Pirates took the lead by a run in the top of the 4th inning. The Phillies answered in the bottom of the 5th inning with singles by Charlie C and Ben B, and ended up closing things out with impressive pitching by Zach G and Carter T. The Pirates Ben Y, Jensen M, Simon T, Matt M and Eason C also collected hits for the Pirates.
Braves over the Cubs 9-1
The Braves pitching was impressive Wednesday night as Sam D and Nate H combined to throw a 2 hitter. On offense the Braves were led by twins Brady & Jack who combined went 4-7 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Aiden L was very strong allowing no earned runs and striking out 7 over 4 innings. Aiden, Bryce B and Holden S had hits for the Cubs while Nate, Sam, and Reece A singled for the Braves.
Nationals over the Colts 8-5
Chase H busted the game open with a bases clearing triple in the top of the second inning, making the score 4-0. After adding another 2 runs in the top of the third on Luke A liner double down the third base line, the score swelled to 6-0 in favor of the Nationals. The Colts, however, were not going down without a fight and with Tommy B stepping up to the plate with 1 out in the bottom of the third, sparked a 3 run rally. Tommy also kept the game close on the mound, but in the end, behind multiple hits my Rehan W and contributions from Maddox M and Ashton H, the Nationals pulled away in the end. On offense the Colts were led by Jacob C who collected multiple hits Wednesday.
Cardinals over Yankees 10-1
When Josh E toes the rubber you take notice. He is a presence on the mound and on Thursday he took over the game both pitching and on offense. Josh struck out 10 Yankees over 5 innings and to complete the night, Josh’s younger brother Matthew came in to close the game. At the plate Josh hit a no doubter for his first home run of the season and finished the night 3-5 with a triple, homer and 5 RBIs. Sean Y collected 3 hits and drove in 2 RBIs. Even though Josh seemed unhittable, Nicky C and Patrick D would not be denied hits on the evening. Also collecting hits for the Cardinals was Amin A, Matthew E, Caleb M and Eric C.
Reds over Dodgers 3-0
Hunter J was straight dealing Wednesday night and hurled a complete game shut out with 11 strikeouts and scattered 3 hits over 6 innings. As is often the case, to throw a shutout, defense is key and Conor E made a spectacular diving catch to keep runs off the board for the Dodgers. On a cold night, where hitting was at a premium, Zachary S laced 2 singles and scored 2 of the Reds 3 runs, while driving in the third. The Dodgers pitching wasn’t far behind the Reds with Thomas R and Jack M holding the Reds to only 5 hits on the night. On offense the Dodgers were led by TRob, who had 2 hits, and Nathan Walls. Along with Zach, the Reds received contributions from Jacob L, Hunter and Conor who each had a hit.
Twins over the Orioles 10-5
I am pretty sure the Twins would like to have a word with the scheduler about their opening slate of games having to face the White Sox, Cardinals and Orioles to start the season! After dropping their first 2 games of the season, the Twins woke up on Thursday with the real chance of facing one of the top pitchers in the league in Andreas M and a potential 0-3 start to the season. But as we know, the Twins can hit and they dug in all night against some of the best pitching the league has to offer and grinded out the win. The Twins offensive star of the night was Nate H who went 3-3 with a triple and 4 RBIs. On the mound Noah J didn’t allow any O's to cross the plate throwing 3 scoreless innings to close out the game. For the Orioles, they had 8 hits on the night, including Leo F's first Majors hit! Webb S and Rowan M each collected 3 hits on the night, including 2 doubles by Rowan. Andreas laced a ball off the fence as well for a double and drove in 2.
White Sox over the Blue Jays 4-0
James B is off to an incredibly hot start! Over his first 3 games James is 8-10 with multiple extra base hits, including a home run. However, yesterday was not about James’s offense, but his pitching. James went the distance giving up only 4 hits over 6 innings and striking out 14 on the night. The Blue Jays may be on hold with the scheduler until his conversation with the Twins is wrapped up because opening against Andreas, Sam B and James B is about as tough as it gets! While hitting wasn’t easy against the White Sox, Aiden R was able to collect 2 hits and Tyler D smashed a double for the Jays.
Giants over Red Sox 7-6
In arguably the most thrilling game of the week, the Giants were able to rally in the top of the 6th with 3 runs to seal the victory over the Red Sox. Facing long odds, the Giants were able to put their first 2 batters on base with Samuel C and Carson P reaching. Beckett A got the scoring started in the 6th with a single, making the score 6-5 Red Sox. With 2 outs and 2 runners on Adam M stepped to the plate and delivered a single to tie the game! With Carson on third base as the go-ahead run, the Giants pushed the score to 7-6 scoring on a wild pitch. The Red Sox received plenty of offense of their own Wednesday, collecting 10 hits, including a multiple hit game from Brayden P and Gabe L. Taylor A, Josh T, Macallan B and Matthew R. all had hits for the Red Sox. For the Giants, Adam M had a 3-3 night, and Becket A had two hits.
