Majors Opening Day Results

Majors Opening Day Results & Recap

With official Opening Day Ceremonies looming in Vienna Little League in two weeks, the Majors schedule got off to a blustery but rousing start at Yeonas Park on Saturday. While the weather conditions were not ideal, with cold, wind, and an occasional sleet storm, the excitement was still palpable at Yeonas.  A crowded house led to a full parking lot and street only parking, and an updated menu at the re-opened snack bar (after a two-year Covid hiatus) led to a festive atmosphere with eight inter-league games on the schedule.  After a full slate of games, the 2022 season has officially begun!

 Phillies over Yankees 6-1

The Phillies opened their season with a 6-1 victory over the Yankees behind a dominant pitching and hitting performance by Sam B.  Sam pitched 4 scoreless innings while striking out 10 Yankees hitters.  Sam was also strong at the plate with a single and a triple.  Zach G also collected 2 hits in the winning effort.  The Yankees were led on offence by Nicky C and Lucas N, who both collected an extra base hit.

Dodgers over Cubs 1-0

Thomas R and Jack M combined to throw a shutout in the Dodgers season opener. The Cubs Aiden L kept the Dodgers off-balance for just under 5 innings, striking out 9.   The game entered the bottom of the 6th with no runners crossing home plate for either team.  With 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th, Nathan W singled on a hard ground ball to short.  Liam S followed up with a line drive to right field and after a couple of wild pitches, the first and only run resulted in a Dodgers walk off victory.  Pax L and Thomas L both had hits for the Cubs.

Cardinals over Pirates 16-6

The Cardinals got off to a hot start in their season opener, knocking 6 hits in the first inning and they never looked back.  Amin A reached base in all 5 of his at bats, going 3-3 with 2 singles, a triple and two walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in another.  Cole N, Jacob K, Peter H and Kalyan C all had multiple hit performances for the Cardinals.  For the Pirates, Mitch W had 2 hits, an RBI and scored a run, while Kyle H pitched a clean inning with 4 strikeouts.

Braves over Colts 5-3

Nate H and Jack K combined to hold the Colts to 3 runs while striking out 16.  Nate H started the game and didn’t allow an earned run through 4 innings of work and was also the star of the game at the plate, collecting 2 hits including a triple and scoring 2 runs.  Brady K and Sam D each had a hit for the Braves.  The Colts’ Tommy C was solid in his first outing of the year, striking out 8 Braves over 4 innings.  Offensively the Colts were led by Ryne E, Chris M and Anthony S.

White Sox over Twins 10-6

One thing is for sure, the Twins and White Sox can both hit a ton!  Between these two teams there were 7 extra base hits.  In a back-and-forth affair, the White Sox were able to outlast the Twins by scoring 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning.  James B was the star of the day for the White Sox, going 4-4 with two doubles, two triples, 3 RBI, while scoring 2 runs.  Sean C, Jake T and Jonah K had a multiple hits for the Sox.  IJ led the Twins with a 3-3 day which included a double and 3 RBI.  Nate H and Noah J collected multiple hits for the Twins as well.

Red Sox currently tied with Nationals 4-4

Seven innings wasn’t enough to settle the matchup between the Red Sox and Nationals who ended up tied with time expiring.  Taylor A led the Red Sox offensively with 2 hits, including a double while scoring and driving in a run.  Brayden P, Macallan B and Adrian O each had hits for the Red Sox.  The Nationals called on Owen H to pitch the 5th, 6th and 7th inning.  Even though he is only 10 years old, Owen was up for the task, allowing no runs in 2 1/3 innings.  Luke A and Chase H both had multiple hits for the Nationals. The game will be continued after spring break.

Giants over Reds 7-5

The Giants started out hot, scoring 6 of their 7 runs in the first 3 innings and were able to hold off a hard charging Reds to seal the victory.  The Giants handed the ball to Beckett A to get the season started and he did not disappoint, throwing 3 scoreless innings, scattering 3 hits and striking out 7.  At the plate, Beckett also had a double while driving in a run.  Danny "Dimes", Adam M, Leitrim M also collected hits for the Giants.  The top of the Reds lineup was in mid-season form, going 10-14 collectively.  Hunter J was 4-4 with a double, while Jacob L, Cameron G and Carter C each had a multiple hit night.

Orioles over Blue Jays 4-0

Welcome to the Andreas M experience!  Andreas picked up right where he left off in 2021.  In a stat line that seems to be from a video game, Andreas threw a complete game, shut out, no hitter and, most mind boggling of all, struck out 18 batters over 6 innings.  If you are keeping track at home, there are only 18 outs in a 6-inning game, so Andreas didn’t allow a ball in play.  Andreas helped his cause at the plate with 2 hits, scoring 2 runs and driving in a run.  The Blue Jays pitching was very strong as well with Aaron B, Aiden R and Ryan D combining to only allow 4 hits all night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome one of the most dominating pitching performances in recent memory.
