Participation is free: Since 1989, the Vienna Little League (VLL) has offered the Challenger Program for children with special needs to play adaptive baseball in a supportive, nurturing, and fun environment at no cost to the family. Challenger players may begin participating in the program at age 5.
Spring Only, April through June: Vienna Challenger Baseball is a spring-only activity. We do not have a fall season for Challenger. The Challenger season runs from Opening Day (April) through the first weekend in June.
Sunday afternoon games: Vienna’s two Challenger teams, the NL Nationals and the AL Nationals, are composed of players of varying abilities who play each other on Sundays during the season. VLL majors teams, as well as high schoolers volunteer to run the weekly games and provide on-field coaching support during the games.
No experience necessary: Players will participate in skill development as well as play in a 3-inning game where every player gets to hit the ball, run the bases, and score a run. The games are very fun and everyone has a great time. Basic adaptations are implemented where need be. Parents can watch from the stands or participate on the field.
Opening day: The first game of the season immediately follows the VLL opening day ceremonies at Yeonas Park on around 11 a.m. All subsequent Challenger games are generally played on Sundays at 1:30 PM at Nance Field at Yeonas Park. Other special events, such as the annual game at Flint Hill School and the game we play on the Friday night of Memorial Day Weekend under the lights at Rhodes Field are planned.
